A New Vocabulary

August 19th, 2007 by halou

SFMOMAMore work on Wednesday night. Well, work is not the right word, but we did go through quite a bit and added some needed bits to a few tracks. As of last night, Hollywood Ending, Eejit, Seabright, and It Will All Make Sense In The Morning (These are the final titles. The first three of these were released in dramatically different versions as part of the R/R Coseboom project.) teeter on the edge of completion. Very little left to do on these. We briefly discuss releasing It Will All Make Sense In The Morning as part of some sort of pre-album thing. That discussion is perhaps a ways off, but the track does give some indication as to the flavor of the new material, so it would be appropriate to get it out there…

I’m now lumping the remainder of the tracks into two different piles: those recently written and worked on by me, and those a bit older that Count has been working on and resuscitating. I’m loving every track in both piles right now, though there’s some obvious work that needs to be done still. Mai/Lin and Headlong (old titles waiting to be changed) both have lots of potential. Mai/Lin was something that I didn’t even have on my working hard drive anymore, so it was a very nice surprise to hear what Count had done to it and I have since added a few layers to it myself. Headlong is similar. We have tried many things to it, but it never fit. Now, it sits comfortably within the rest of the tracks and has some great vocal melodies from Rebecca.

As we’re working in the studio, it’s clear that we’ve shed a lot of our old ways of working. It’s almost as if we’ve developed a new vocabulary that we’re increasingly fluent in. I’m very excited to think that within a few months we’ll be finished with album #4…
