Travelogue - Day Two

Chains…

Left Reno early and ended up at a dodgy ‘Mexican’ restaurant for lunch in Lovelock, NV. From there, we just kept on through the state, idealistically thinking we’d be able to drive on through the night into Wyoming and onto Nebraska. Not even close.

The mountains on the eastern edge of Utah are just totally covered in snow. Not only that, but the big, downy flakes are flying straight at us as we slowly wind up and then down the hills. Ultimately, though, things reach a point where we just can’t go on without more traction so we grab the chains and get them on (with a little help from a benevolent local). I was reminded of Gus Van Sant’s film ‘Gerry’ and how things are always at their worst right before their over: about a mile or so down the road, things clear up and we remove the chains.

Entering Wyoming, though, is even more treacherous. We stop briefly and the advice Rebecca gets from a trucker is that the drive through the mountains here (the sisters, they’re called) is best left until morning. We slide along the roads into a hotel for the night and reconcile with ourselves that we are now behind schedule.
